Undo a Kensington Expert Mouse (Model #64325)

May 2nd, 2009

Spilling liquid near computers and computer gear is a dangerous and sometimes expensive occupation! Video 60 recently had an experience where a glass of red wine tipped over and flooded the Kensington Expert Mouse (model number #K64325).

The mouse is a super tool with a very fast trackball (great if you are working on 2 or more 30″ Apple screens).

To keep with the theme of this site, the following video is nearly 60 seconds long and covers a very basic overview of what’s under the hood of a Kensington Expert Mouse.

It is not designed to show you anything other than what the inside looks like and where the screws are located. If you find the video useful, excellent - that’s our aim with producing 60 second video tutorials.

The video does not go into any great detail about cleaning, drying or results, so very quickly these are the highlights of the video:

  1. The mouse did not work due to spilling red wine in the carousel that holds the super fast trackball;
  2. The parts were totally disassembled and washed thoroughly using a can of CRC - Air Brush for the circuit boards, and simple warm water for all the non-electrical components;
  3. The parts were dried completely in a luke warm oven that left the door ajar about 4 inches. This step is not necessary if you live in a warm climate and can place all the components in the dry sun. If you do use the oven, please monitor closely. This took about 30 minutes under close and regular supervision;
  4. The mouse now works as well as it did before the red wine flooded the base.

I can not guarantee you will resurrect your own Kensington Expert Mouse, by following this tutorial. All I am saying is that it worked for me, and given the lack of information around on the subject it seemed appropriate to conduct a quick video that may help others.
